What is the In-School Mentoring Program?

The Mentoring Program reaches out to even more children within the community who could benefit from an adult role model and the special friendship of a mentor.
The program is a fun and rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the child. Children in grades K to 4 are referred by their teachers and are matched with a volunteer Mentor. Mentors meet with their Mentees/Little Buddies on school property during school hours for one hour per week. The Mentoring Program reaches out to children within the school community who could benefit from an adult role model and from the friendship of a Mentor.

What is a Mentor?

A Mentor is a volunteer adult over 18 years of age, who cares for and relates well with kids. Mentors are screened by Big Brothers and Big Sisters of West Island and are asked to visit their Mentee/Little Buddy weekly for the school year. Mentors encourage, support and motivate children in a school setting by doing fun activities such a crafts, games, reading, sports, etc.

What are the advantages of the Mentoring Program?

The Mentoring Program provides the children with special one-on-one attention that so many children desperately need but cannot obtain in today's crowded classrooms. These special friendships provide the children with an advocate to encourage life-long learning.

The screening process consists of:

  • An office interview
  • 3 references (character, employer/volunteer, family)
  • A police check
  • A child safety training
